Opera.com that bad?
Yesterday FavBrowser.com did a web site analysis of the different sites offered by each browser vendor. Our favorite, Opera.com came out as last, but I dare to differ.
Of course everyone is entitled to have their own opinion, thus as such I can actually post my reply to analysis of the Opera.com home page.
What are we looking at?
First of all it is stated that "I will analyze every web browser start page", however when looking at the locations this isn't correct. The location provided for Microsoft's Internet Explorer is the product page, on my installation the first thing I see on a fresh start-up (next to the configuration page) is MSN. Firefox doesn't start with it's own product page, but with a welcome and an explanation on tabbed browsing, which after closing turns into Google (or an imported home page). Safari uses the default address (already present on my Mac) that points to Apple Hot News (or imported settings). Opera actually points to the portal page, which details the product features.
So actually it's already a strange review by itself as it contradicts the intentioned web sites. However if we look it from a perspective from a product page, then IE, Firefox and Safari are correct, yet for Opera the home page is used and not the desktop browser product page, which is conveniently stated on the front page.
All in all
What I do find a strong argument is the lack of the word "free". Especially since Opera for Desktop has had a history of being a pay for product (ad ware) before the 8.5 release. Opera Software also makes a series of products that are free (desktop, mini) and pay ware (mobile), thus making a distinct notion of the difference is only more important as it can confuse new users when they want to try out Opera.
However next time, do try to be very specific at what kind of situation you're reviewing: browser start pages (on new installations), browser product pages, or vendor home pages.
He maybe used the first result returned by google. That is likely where the majority of new users will come from.
Hi,
Change from "start page" to "main web page", hope that helps.
I was thinking to analyze http://www.opera.com/products/desktop/ but it's even worse, there are even no download button at all when finishing reading features, so users have to scroll. I will expand my post a bit and will update you soon.
"I have used Google Search and thought what would users type in order to find that web browser.
So it was like: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera. I took a first result (which most searchers clicks) and analyzed that page."
Opera had nice home page some time ago (screen provided in topic).
Regarding "FREE" thing, see this http://www.favbrowser.com/opera-browser-is-free/
That what happens, by the way: http://www.opera.com/products/desktop hadn't "FREE" also, even its info about desktop browser.
Google, you are right, just updated my topic :-)
