Firefox 4.0 theme mock-ups appear as well
28.07.2009
The Mozilla wiki involving the next next Firefox has been updated with theme mock-ups as well, following only the recently unveiled brainstorming for Firefox 3.7.
Although Firefox 4 is still far away, the idea of this whole thing is to get people inspired and brainstorm on how the next Firefox will look like. Some details reveal an even more Chrome/Safari like look:

Highlights:
- Alternatively put tabs on top, rather than the standard below location bar (similar to Chrome and Opera).
- Combo of the stop, refresh and go button at the end of the location bar (similar to Chrome and Safari).
What do you think? Is Firefox getting more and more like a Chrome/Safari, or is this simply the best way, no matter who thought of it first? Remember, these are mock-ups to get ideas rolling and may not represent the end result whatsoever.
You know, although I have the browsers in question for testing purposes (and site compatibility issues, incidentally), I never noticed the combining of the stop/reload button with the go button. That's how it's meant to work! Quite a few times I was annoyed I couldn't hit "reload" if the loading of a tab had failed. In Opera, I had two choices: Use the keyboard to press enter, or copy the url and then select "paste and go". I think a "go" button unnecessarily clutters the UI, though, so this solution would be perfect (though not necessarily the placement of the button). I wonder if a customized opera button could do this..
Tabs at the top, well they're all seeing it now, aren't they? That it just plain makes sense. The address is an item within a 'tab'. It makes more visual sense, although under the hood it's probably the same old UI thing which is told to redraw with a new url each time one switches the tab.
What I find worrying, though, is the distinct lack of color. I know the newer Opera skins annoyed me because the icons were all black-n-white. Way to go to make me unable to distinguish buttons at a glance! On this screen, I can see it's less of an issue, because beasically each item has its predefined position, but I'd like to see the bookmarks menu/manager, or a customized setup with more of the buttons immediately available.
My personal preference is also against disproportionate arrows (i.e. back button bigger than forward button). Symmetry appeals to me. And I don't want my browser to second-guess whether I'd not rather go backwards than forwards. But that's been with Firefox for some time, so it's a moot point I guess.
If Firefox has tabs like Opera, I'd love Mozilla forever.
Turn Page and Tools into an icon-only tab like the Home tab. Save more space.
Aren't there themes that place tabs on top already? I mean, I don't know, but I'd find it weird if there weren't.
